The Good Shepherd

George Clooney is more than a man who likes to stare at goats; he is also a good shepherd.

Before George was successful and was just starting out he had a reoccurring role on The Facts of Life.
Now that he is, it has occurred to him, to give us some facts on life in Sudan.

Southern Sudan is a very dusty, hot, and poor country.
They have been at war for decades with Northern Sudan, which has been said to be Africa's longest running civil war, which has mostly consisted of the control of their oil regions.

Southern Sudan's referendum on independence from Northern Sudan was held the week of January 9th to the 15th. Results won't officially be released until next month but according to leading international observers it appears the referendum was a success.

Clooney, along with former U.S. president Jimmy Carter was out there during the time of this referendum, to offer supports and to do humanitarian work.
It was Clooney's second visit out there in the past three months and this past visit, he came down with malaria which he is still currently battling.

While on the Piers Morgan show that aired on Friday Jan 21 on CNN, Clooney quipped;
"I guess the mosquito in Juba looked at me like I was the bar."

It is the second time Clooney has came in contact with malaria from his visits to Sudan to monitor it's progress.

Fun facts about Malaria that I learned from this reputable doctor:

Caused by being bitten by an infected mosquito, and is limited to mostly developing countries and kills roughly 1 million a year.

Malaria can cause chills and flu-like symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and last but not least jaundice.

Fun times.... and this has happened to George twice. My guess is,  it is the same pack of mosquitoes that on one movie night decided to watch Batman & Robin where George sucked the life out of them with his portrayal of the caped crusader.

Giving George malaria, is their revenge.

All jokes aside, Clooney  as of late has been quite involved in humanitarian work over in Southern Sudan and is quite excited to see peace over there.
Some skeptics and cynics say this is just a way for him to get good press.

But George is trying to make a difference on the side of the fence that is not his own while many other pampered Hollywood sheep enjoy their greener pastures.

Southern Sudan lacks the basic elements of modern civilization, the little things that we all take for granted.

Clooney wants to see progress and peace.

There is still a lot of conflict that will continue between the northern and southern parts of Sudan before it is over, at least when it comes to the roles of their oil.

China has been a big help to Sudan and their infrastructure and over the past 15 years has invested 15 billion dollars into them and now accounts for 50% of Sudan's exports.

Southern Sudan is lucky to have China and Clooney in their corner as Sudan continues to fight for independence and Clooney continues to be a good shepherd with leading by example.

This is just one point of view from me to ewe.

Blah Blah Blog Sheep; Out.

  1. As I was preparing a eulogy for Fight Blog, out from the shadows comes this gem. I think you're on to something here. This feels like Fight Blog's illegitimate cousin or something.

You need to check Clooney out in The American. It's a complete deviation from his usual Danny Ocean type of character.

Also, The Good Shepherd staring Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Alec Baldwin is a personal classic. Not because of the plot or cinematography or anything. It's because in Good Will Hunting, Damon (Will) and Robin Williams (Sean) share this exchange:

Sean: So what do you want to do?
Will: I wanna be a shepherd
    Sean: Really.
Will: I wanna move up to Nashua, get a nice little spread, get some sheep and tend to them.
Sean: Maybe you should go do that.

Well, looks like Damon finally made good on his word.

Excuse me while I see about a girl.
